10thDoM on Facebook!

Hey, everyone!

FYI: the relaunch is still being prepared... in the meantime, come join us on Facebook!

The Return of 10thDoM...

Hello, everyone...

So, more than a handful of people have expressed distress at the absence of The Tenth Daughter of Memory from their writing lives and, as callous as he may be, JeffScape has decided to attempt a relaunch of sorts.

However... things have changed.

The new system in mind provides longer periods of both submitting and voting, as well as limits the types of entries a specific Muse will accept.  The system, so far, looks wonderful on paper, but it is obvious to those involved that said system will undoubtedly run into problems.

Which means what, exactly?

Which means that, starting in November, The Tenth Daughter of Memory is going to launch a 3-cycle "beta test" to try out the next system, with the hopes of having a full relaunch in time for the "4th Annual River of Mnemosyne."

The beta test will be all-volunteer and done in private, and, well, we need volunteers.

Anyone interested in either participating or administrating, please email us at 10thDoM@gmail.com.

Winner: "Setting Fire to Slippery Slopes"

Little point announcing a winner with four entries and only three votes. Interest has been dwindling and though it is a little heartbreaking, its originator isn't interested in monthly muses, and only four men and women are left standing. Even  attempting to change what has been a working formula to suit a couple of people who didn't even enter has not encouraged others to participate.
On a positive note, it's been a ride. We've stretched our creative muscles, landed in places fantastic and unknown and explored our potential. Thank you so much to the people who have administered. Thank you very much to Jeffscape for starting the whole thing and giving us the opportunity to be as creative as we are. Thank you to the participants for having the courage to take a leap and accept the critiques of others. Never say never, but I think this little adventure has reached it's zenith. Nine muses are NEVER enough...keep writing, keep creating and keep the faith. Thank you and...it was wonderful while it lasted.

"Setting Fire to Slippery Slopes"

Quite appropriate given that this little blog is on a slippery slope and that Colorado is going up in flames. Time to unleash the hidden pyromaniac, reignite the creative flame. Half Moose with a Twist invites us to burn it up with:

"Setting Fire to Slippery Slopes"

Burn baby burn....rip it up in a blaze of glory because where there's smoke, there's fire.

Reminder: "Testing the Friendship"

By now, your story should be swimming along nicely, even if your poor characters are not. But whether they're barely treading water or on their way to Davy Jones' Locker, it's time for you to think about pulling the plug.

Now, on another note...

Contributors have been a little thin on the ground lately despite some appreciated spruiking by our regulars. It takes a little bravery to put yourself up here but we're a supportive lot and would love to have you along for the ride.

We here at 10thDoM encourage others to take the challenge. It's a lot of work administering the site for half a dozen people. And besides, we're running out of challenges for our most successful contributors, Half-Moose and JeffScape. We need some young/new/old blood to give them a run for their money. There are followers on this page who have only contributed intermittently or not at all.

How about giving it a go? It's fun, it's competitive and we'll all read your stories. You can even receive a goodly amount of feedback if you want it. (And probably even if you don't.) Remember, anything qualifies, as long as it addresses the muse - artworks, film, voice, prose, poetry, photography... anything you fancy. Win a muse and you get to pick one of your own.

Come play.

"Testing the Friendship"

Not everything is always as it seems. There's an old African proverb that says "Only a fool tests the depth of the water with both feet.”  As many have discovered, sometimes it's best not to put even a friendship to the test. Well, not unless it's in the interest of a good story.  And that's just what our friend Baino hopes to see with this muse.

"Testing the Friendship"

So go ahead, jump in with both feet. Toss your characters into a testy situation, and let's see what happens.

"Tattoos and Teardrops"

Got ink? Of course you do! But if you’re in tears over a tattoo run amuck, Tom of Half Moose with a Twist suggests that now is the time to put things right.  Grab your pen – or quill, if that better suits your style – and give us a tattoo you can be proud of.

 "Tattoos and Teardrops"

Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi 1798-1861

So no more tears over spilled ink. Wipe those eyes and get to work. Let’s see what shape your tattoo will take.

Will the Real Winner Please Take a Bow ....RoM 03

Well this is embarrassing and a first!

It's with great regret that we have realised our River of Mnemosyne programmer (we won't name any names but he knows who he is) had a little difficulty counting the votes, and didn't wait for backup to confirm that the actual winner was not Tom at Half Moose With A Twist.  Despite Tom's valient effort and like so many close races, he was pipped at the post by one point. The REAL winner of the third River of Mnemosyne Challenge is:.

We're deeply embarrassed by this error and hope you'll forgive us. Both entries, in fact all entries, were of the usual high standard with some hopefully being progressed into novels. We certainly hope that Patti takes the plunge with:
.
Muse 3: The Monk
Muse 4: Sagittarius
Muse 6: Shit Happens
Muse 8: Tartuffe

Now because we've broken the rules...let's break one more. Congratulations and sincere apologies to Tom. We'll leave your links on the page because they're worth it.

We'll be back to regular, and hopefully more accurate, programming with Tom's muse on 1st March. Bring your friends along now that the gruelling swim is over. Thanks again to all participants, we look forward to a high level of competition throughout this year.

RoM 03-1: "A Legacy of Smoke and Shadow"

We're going down the river... for a third time!

PattiKen, as the winner of last year's recruiting drive, has earned the envious honor of picking the opening Muse for the River of Mnemosyne, thereby leaving the rest of us to jump into the water behind her (anyone else notice that sudden rush of warm water?).

And the first Muse is:

"A LEGACY OF SMOKE AND SHADOW"

Don't forget that this is only the first part (hopefully) of your overall entry, and there will not be a vote until all the Muses are in or we run out of time.

And if you have no idea what's going on, check out the rules for February's challenge here: 3rd Annual "River of Mnemosyne" Challenge.

*Don't forget to submit a Muse if you are one of the first nine to link an entry. If you do not, your link will be deleted and you will have to re-link. Email the admins (all of 'em) with your Muse!

As always, don't sign up until you've posted the entry on your site and link that entry directly (not your blog home page). In the meantime, leave a comment and let us know you're game!

Post as soon as you're ready, and the Muses will start sailing in.

Good luck! And enjoy!

3rd Annual "River of Mnemosyne" Challenge

It's one again time to separate the Spartans from the Helots...

RIVER OF MNEMOSYNE, 2012

Welcome to the third annual "River of Mnemosyne" Challenge at The Tenth Daughter of Memory. As with last year, we're going to explain the rules today and tomorrow the challenge begins! There are a few changes this time around, so read carefully if you participated last year (actually, read carefully anyway).

The Challenge

1. For the challenge, you are creating a single overall work (in any format) that will encompass all of the posted Muses this month. Unlike normal Muses, each participant may only submit one (1) entry for the challenge. Basically, your first post is "Muse 1," your second post is "Muse 2," etc. There will be nine (9) designated Muses for a total of nine (9) chapters.

2. The goal is to tell a complete story (be it visual or written) through all nine Muses, but you can end your story at any time; after any Muse. To designate your ending, just write a big "The End" at the end of your final entry.

The Muses

3. The first Muse has been selected by PattiKen (who won the recruitment challenge) and your first entry will be based on that. The subsequent Muses will be chosen based on the fastest submissions. The first person to link an entry picks the first Muse. The second person to link an entry (any entry) picks the second Muse, and so on. In all likelihood, this means that the people who link in positions 1 through 9 on the link widget will pick the nine (9) Muses.
  • To submit a Muse, simply email the admins (their contact information is on the left sidebar) with the Muse.
  • New Muses will post at 12:01 AM, GMT, the day after an admin receives the submitted Muse (no more than one Muse will post in a day). If using multiple-part entries for an individual Muse, only the final part will only count in determining who picks the following Muse. In this case, please post a comment letting us know that the final part has been posted and linked.
4. Participants will link their blog entries per the usual procedure. We will be using one widget for the entire exercise, participants need to denote the chapter number of their specific entries each time they link. Example:
  1. Johnny Fresh (Muse 1)
  2. Linda Linda (Muse 1)
  3. Johnny Fresh (Muse 2)
  4. Johnny Fresh (Muse 3)
  5. Linda Linda (Muse 2)
  6. Robert Radical (Muse 1)
  7. and so on...
5. Do not skip Muses or do them out of order. Also, do not combine Muses into one post.

6. Other than that, do as much or as little as you'd like. You can dictate your own pace; approach this at warp speed or just mosey along. It doesn't matter how far along you are compared to how far along the other challengers are. Your entries for the first Muse can be linked starting tomorrow.

The Vote

7. Voting begins on the 22nd and you'll be voting for the participant's overall body of work. Our usual rule of "don't vote, can't win" still applies. Anyone who posts a "Muse 1" AND a "Muse 2" is allowed to vote, regardless if they continue on in the challenge.

8. In addition to normal voting, completing Muses 1 through 9 will add bonus points to your final vote tally (the value of the bonus points is based on the number of participants).

9. The winner will be announced on the 27th and will receive the "River of Mnemosyne, 2012" trophy to post on their blog.

Feel free to barrage the admins and comment sections with questions and suggestions. No, really... if you aren't sure of something, ask an admin immediately.

Get your river flowing! And have fun!

Winner: "Coed Naked Armageddon"

Our winner tells a no-holds-barred story of campus mischief run amok. Her four-part tale illustrates just how far off-course the quest for popularity can veer.

Baino!

Congratulations, Baino, for writing a story to give all parents nightmares about sending the kids off to the halls of higher learning.

You can read Baino's story here.
Baino's Muse will appear in on March 16 and the next Muse, which comes from Tom, will be posted on the March 1st. Meanwhile, dig out your water wings. We're about to embark on a month-long trip down the rapids of the River of Mnemosyne, beginning February 1.

"Coed Naked Armageddon"

We came in naked, we frolicked through time naked, and according to Tom and other artists, we’ll go out naked. (But, hey, it was fun while it lasted, right?)  So what about you? What's your end-of-world scenario?

"COED NAKED ARMAGEDDON""

Detail from The Last Judgment
by Jacob de Backer (c. 1589)

Will Good and Evil engage in the battle to end all battles? Will it be a somber wake for life as we know it?  Or will the end come with one last fling as we go out with a bang (so to speak...)?  How do you picture it?

Remember, don't sign up until you've posted the entry on your site and link that entry directly (not your blog home page). In the meantime, leave a comment and let us know you're game!

Post as soon as you're ready, and we'll post a reminder on the 22nd. Voting begins on the 26th!

Reminder: "Beneath the Pools of Another Moon"

Always in her proper sphere is the mistress of the night. Limpid pools and moonlit skies, made for magic and mayhem. 'Tis true, everyone is a moon with a light and dark side. Let yours wax and wane, not much time left to enter.

The River of Mnemosyne Challenge is just weeks away and  begins in February.  There are 9 episodes, 9 muses chosen by those who post first. See the rules here for full details or talk to one of our admins.

"Beneath the Pools of Another Moon"

Ground pools of liquid erupting beneath the icy surface of Enceladus or shadows cast by an orbiting satellite? Another moon crowns the sky so perfect, white and cold it shines. Time to move right out of your comfort zone and breach the final frontier. She Writes has us pondering the celestial and the subterranean in:

"BENEATH THE POOLS OF ANOTHER MOON"

*image taken from here

Keep it clean, there are so many interpretations of 'moon' this could be an incredible journey!
