Winner: "Extreme Robot Vodka"

Without confessing to having actually having any experience in this kind of thing, yet convincing us of the OH&S/OSHA issues associated with a Sexbot, we have a winner:

Baino!

It was a tie for first (with Patti), but Baino held the tie-breaker. Congrats! Check out the winning entry:

Baino's Muse will appear on January 16th. Come back on New Year's Day for Julie's! Speaking of... Happy New Year to everyone and good luck with the next Muse.

Fingers of Aidos - "Shafts of Grace in the Corner of a Room"
*Noiseless Patient Spider did not vote. Well, he did, but it was a vote we couldn't accept. Attempts were made to contact, but he's one of those "hidden email" bloggers. NPS, you get a finger!
*Not for Jellyfish did not vote. Finger.

They join Joanny in having active fingers. Heh.

Multiple Entries and Multiple-Part Entries
We continue to have voting issues concerning participants who routinely post multiple entries, as well as multiple-part entries, so we're gonna try something new.
  • Beginning immediately, when submitting multiple entries, please label each separate entry using an alphabetic identifier. Use the identifier (A) if you know you're submitting (or think you might try to submit) more than one entry. Example:
    • Bobby
    • Bobby (B)
  • When submitting multiple-part entries, please label each part using a numeric identifier. Example:
    • Jackie (Part 1 of 2)
    • Jackie (Part 2 of 2)
  • For posterity's sake, here's an example of multiple entries and multiple-part entries:
    • Teddy (A)(Part 1 of 2)
    • Teddy (A)(Part 2 of 2)
    • Teddy (B)
    • Teddy (C)(Part 1 of 3)
    • Teddy (C)(Part 2 of 3)
    • Teddy (C)(Part 3 of 3)
So, in the third example above, voters would vote for A, B, or C. Do NOT vote for individual parts of a multiple-part entry.

Watch your lips. It's time to vote.

Everyone needs to vote for their Top 3.

There are 2.5 days to vote. Don't wait too bloody long! Winner will be announced on the 14th!

Voting Procedure: There was some confusion during voting for the previous Muse (despite instructions posted everywhere), so here are some friendly reminders (also found at the F.A.Q.):
  • Multi-part entries are voted for as A SINGLE ENTRY in its entirety. Do NOT vote for "Entry, Part 3" or "Entry, Part 7." Vote for "Entry."
  • Vote for only as many entries as the instructions state above. In this case, THREE (3). Not one, not five, not "everybody." THREE (3).
Votes should look something like this:
1. Best
2. Close
3. Pretty Good

We can't and won't count improperly submitted votes. Also, while admins will attempt to allow you to fix improper votes, there's no guarantee they'll notice or get to it in time. The earlier you vote, the better chance mistakes will be discovered and rectified. Once the "Voting Closed" post goes up, voting is over, and even if admins are in the middle of working out a voting error with a participant, voting is over.

Fingers of Aidos - "Confession"
*She Writes did not vote! However, since there was a miscommunication with an admin, she will not collect a Finger of Aidos!
*Joanny did not vote! It seems she tried, but just... well... hard to explain. Sorry, Joanny, you're getting a Finger!

*Runners-Up - You might have noticed a Runner-Up last Muse. That's because we've decided that runners up for Muses will be announced and listed depending on the number of entries in a given Muse. There will not be a separate "Runners-Up" page, but you'll be able to check "Winner" posts to see who came oh, so close. One placement will be announced for every 10 entries received. Basically, this means:
  • 1-10 entries: Winner only.
  • 11-20 entries: Winner and 1st Runner-Up.
  • 21-30 entries: Winner and 1st and 2nd Runners-Up.
  • And so on...

We also retroactively listed runners-up for previous Muses, so check some of the more popular Muses of the past to find out who they are.

Fingers of Aidos - "Suicide Seat"
PJ and Julie did not vote. So we've given 'em fingers.

Remember, beginning with this Muse, there is a penalty for not voting (in other words, PJ and Julie are not penalized... except for being given fingers).

*Alter Egos: After rampant deliberation, we've decided to disallow alter egos. There are lots of reasons why, including the logistics of it and the potential to cheat (no, the alter egos we've had have not been guilty of any such thing, and we're grateful that they brought attention to this). However...
  • You can still submit from alter egos, but - to keep things fair and fully disclosed - 10thDoM will reveal your identity to the other participants if you do.
  • Entries from multiple identities will be treated as multiple entries from one identity. Check the F.A.Q. if you're not familiar with those rules.
  • Anyone who submits from more than one identity without notifying the admins beforehand will have all of their identities banned from participating in 10thDoM.
As usual, these rules go into effect as of the next Muse.

*Labors of Heracles: Effectively immediately, we're changing how we list blogs on the Labors.
  • Previously, if a winner won multiple times from multiple blogs, each of the "winning blogs" would garner a place in the Labors.
  • Now, regardless of how many blogs a participant submits from, the blog their most recent winning entry was submitted from will be placed on the Labors.

Fingers of Aidos - from "Silence Lies Broken"
Megha did not vote! And so earns a "Finger." Yes, her vote could have changed the outcome.

*Not Voting: Uh oh... speaking of the Fingers of Aidos... looks like the admins are implementing a penalty for not voting.
  • Starting with the next Muse, people listed as "Fingers of Aidos" will lose points on their entries equivalent to first-place votes.
  • The penalty is cumulative. For example, anyone who posts twice in a row without voting will lose points equivalent to two first-place votes (and so on).
  • This penalty will apply until that participant finally participates in a vote (at which point their slate is wiped clean).

*We realize this might encourage people to vote without actually reading everyone's entries. Again, don't be "that guy" (or gal, as the first confirmed case happened to be). We've long had the capability to see who actually reads each others' entries and the introduction of Blogger Stats has only made that easier. Don't encourage Not for Jellyfish to pursue her "confirmed reading" rule (which the other admins have so far shot down, citing its current lack of necessity). Maintaining integrity is far easier to do on your own.

*As with all rules, this one takes effect next Muse.

*Alter Egos: We've recently been approached with a question concerning "alter ego" submissions. The admins are currently locked in a heated debate on the matter, but rest assured we will have established rules on the subject in the near future. In the meantime, anyone with a desire to separate entries along multiple identities should contact an admin before submitting from an alter ego.
  • Participants discovered using alter egos without prior disclosure to the admins will be banned from 10thDoM.
  • This has nothing to do with bloggers who have multiple blogs attributed to the same identity.

*Photo Entries: As we implied during the previous Muse, we're toying with "slightly different" rules for image-based submissions. This arose from questions pertaining to our "nothing old" rule. We're working on a fix that's fair to the writers while remaining conducive to the photographers. In the meantime, just proceed as you normally would.

*Winning; Submitting a Muse: There was some confusion regarding the deadline to submit a Muse after winning (probably JeffScape's fault, since most everything else is). Winners have until the "Reminder" post of the Muse following their victory. The "Reminder" posts goes up on the 7th or 22nd at 12:01 AM. In other words, you have until the 7th/22nd, or through the 6th/21st. Yeah, er... we guess that clears it up.

ADMINS WANTED
*Well... maybe. We're currently mulling adding more admins for a few reasons, one of which is to even out the current admin rotation (and to help cover emergencies, since all of the admins seem to schedule their personal disasters at the same time). Another reason is that we want to see if anyone - who has the time and wherewithal - can bring new ideas to the table. If anyone's interested, shoot one of the existing admins an email and let us know! Web design, graphic design, and widget programming skills are a plus, but by no means a requirement. Experience setting up not-for-profit organizations is another plus, but also not a requirement.

JOIN 10THDOM!!!
*Though we just went through a growth spurt, we'd still like to expand 10thDoM. While we prefer quality to quantity, if anyone would be willing to write a "come join us" post on their individual blogs, explaining what 10thDoM is and how it works, that would earn those who do some worthless brownie points.

Winner: "Silence Lies Broken"

You can unplug your ears. The yelling is over. The undisputed champion of the decibel is...

JeffScape!

Scream out the congratulations! And go read the winning entry here:

1st Runner-Up: Maha, "The Teacher"
2nd Runner-Up: Xander (Brian Miller), "Silence. Lies. Broken."

By the way, "Silence Lies Broken" has, well, broken the record for most participants in a Muse with 18. The record was previously held by "Moon" (early November, 2009) and "Live Like There's No Tomorrow" (late May, 2010), which both had 13 participants.

"Silence Lies Broken" has also broken the record for most entries, with 26 (previously held by "Live Like There's No Tomorrow," with 21).

*One of our esteemed admins, Not For Jellyfish, is tossing around "confirmed reading" ideas again... let's not give her a reason to continue that brainstorm, eh? Several participants have suspected their entries of being skipped in the past and notified us of the possibility (and at least one participant was proven guilty of it... she knows who she is), but it's not yet a large enough problem for us to directly address. All we're saying: have some integrity and read everyone's entries.

Reminder: "Silence Lies Broken"

Are you staying quiet? Well... stop!

*Runners Up?: One of the admins here brought up a question concerning posting runners up. Is posting the top 2 or 3 something everyone would like to see? Let us know.

*Voter's Shame: Now called "The Fingers of Aidos," the participants who didn't vote in the previous Muse will appear in the "Reminder" posts from now on. The admin who implemented the section (cough, JeffScape, cough) feels like a turd for stealing thunder away from the previous winner... so we've moved the thunder-stealing here.

*Rule clarification: Our one and only content rule here at 10thDoM is that all entries must be new works. Specifically, new and original works created for 10thDoM. Meme combos are fine (and many participants post those), but the intent to link to 10thDoM must be clear.

So there they were, two first-time participants head-to-head (neck-to-neck?), locked in a tie for first place while a veteran third participant lurked closely behind. One voter was left... one voter who would determine the clear-cut winner of "Below the Neck."

Except that voter never showed up, leaving the matter to tie-breaker.

Without further ado, the winner for "Below the Neck" is first-timer...

The body cannot live without the head. Posting for "Below the Neck" is closed and voting is now open. So use your head!

Everyone needs to vote in the comments (no, really... VOTE!) for their Top 3.

*As a courtesy for the vote tally, please NUMBER the entries you're voting for like so:
1. First Place Vote
2. Second Place Vote
3. Third Place Vote

It's not usually a problem, but when non-voting comments get mixed in with the voting comments, it can make things frustrating.

*Also, for the new participants, vote for multiple-part entries (such as Baino #1) as ONE entry (in other words, do not vote for each part individually).

*And please remember not to act like a certain occasional participant and not even bother to read the entries prior to submitting a vote. She knows who she is (it's called lack of integrity) and, yes, we know who she is (it's called technology). Don't be "that person."

Remember, only 2.5 days to vote. The winner will be announced on the 29th.

Reminder: "Below the Neck"

What exactly are you looking at? Oh, heh... sorry. Didn't mean to accuse. Just meant to remind that the deadline for "Below the Neck" is almost here!

*So why did we start a Voter's Shame? Here's why: in 12 of 22 Muses (including the River of Mnemosyne Challenge) there’s been at least 1 participant who didn’t vote. In 9 of those 12 occurrences, those missing votes could’ve affected the winning entry (and in 1 case undoubtedly did so). That's why. So remember to vote!

"Below the Neck"

Baino's avoiding all eye contact for some odd reason (maybe it's because she "borrowed" this Muse), and she wants us to concentrate our endeavors...

"BELOW THE NECK"

Keep your heads down and create something!

Winner: "There's Gotta Be a Catch"

This is the part of the movie where everyone is covered in blood, the evil bad guy is dead, and the hero has caught the girl. Our hero is....

Brian Miller!

The dude is tearing up the tie-breakers! Although we don't have a girl to give you, we can give you a round of applause! Go check out his winning entry:

Runner-Up: Tom, "Dent Keel, In the 21st Century"

On a more serious note, we've decided to start a Voter's Shame section. Neither Siobhan nor William voted (and both are repeat offenders), so drop by their blogs and give 'em an insult!

Anyhoo, check in on the 16th for Baino's Muse. Brian's will appear September 1st.

JOIN 10THDOM!!!
*Existing participants and admins alike have wondered how to increase the number of participants at 10thDoM, and while we prefer quality to quantity, if anyone would be willing to write a "come join us" post on their individual blogs, explaining what 10thDoM is and how it works, that would totally rock.

*Tie-Breaker Clarification - We have two tie-breakers here in the event of ties in votes (which, so far, has only happened twice). The first tie-breaker is dependent on which of the tied entries has more "higher-level" votes (1st place, then 2nd place, etc.). The second is dependent on which entry was posted first. In light of some participants posting multiple-part entries, we will apply the method used for our River of Mnemosyne Challenge, which is the first one to post the final part of their overall entry takes the tie (however many parts it may be).

*Collaborative Entries - Last Muse we had our very first collaborative entry, which was a pretty cool phenomenon. But, it drove us crazy because we had to figure out how to handle it fairly for voting. So here's how it's gonna work from here on out: Collaborative entries - regardless of how many collaborators - are considered one entry from one author. It's up to the collaborators to decide who links the entry (or its parts). The linker receives the right to vote for that Muse, regardless of whose blog the links take you to (part 1 at Writer A's blog, part 2 at Writer B's blog, for instance). Essentially, collaborations are treated as normal multi-part entries from one author.

Here's the rub: Should non-linking, non-voting collaborators submit extra entries for a particular Muse - thereby earning a vote - they cannot vote for the collaboration. As with all new rules, this will take effect next Muse.

*Voter Integrity - It's not our job to regulate who reads what and who votes how (as mentioned previously), but since participants have been consistently expressing disappointment at other participants not even bothering to read their entries, we'll mention it again.

Participants SHOULD view and read ALL of the entries prior to voting. It is what is expected, it is how 10thDoM is set up, and, by the way, it is what is fair. That stated, we're still not going to check up on anyone (although if the particular admin who wants to enforce this finds an effective and easy way of doing so, we'll more than happily implement it).

ADMIN WANTED
*Speaking of admins, we're currently in desire someone who has the time and wherewithal to become an admin for 10thDoM. We do have a few already under consideration, but if anyone's interested, shoot one of the existing admins an email and let us know!

It's afternoon! Which is just a funny way of saying that posting is over and voting is now officially underway.

Those finally awake need to vote for their top 3.

*Remember, moondustwriter and JeffScape #2 are multi-part entries. Multi-part entries are voted for as a single whole.

*There is, however, a first here, and that is brian miller and newcomer tina have teamed up for a story. The admins will revisit how to approach such collaborations in the future, but for now, each of their individual posts should be voted for as individual entries.

    "War"

Way back in early January the Muse was "Dirty!" The winner of that Muse by a landslide was Cinnamon. Only, she forgot to vote... so JeffScape won (which is how we wound up with that insane "Clarity Through a Cinnamon Mist" Muse).

Anyway, long story short, because of the new procedure in picking Muses, we've given the honor of selecting early July's to Cinnamon, the true first two-time winner here at The Tenth Daughter of Memory, and she's selected...

Have the jitters? Or are you just shaking with excitement?

This Muse is moving faster than my best friend on a double espresso. Get your posts up!

    Just a few carried-over reminders:
    • The schedule for winners of a Muse choosing the next Muse is being extended.
      • Beginning with this Muse, winners will have until the Reminder post of the subsequent Muse to decide.
      • If a winner fails to notify an admin of their Muse choice by the Reminder post of the subsequent Muse, the choice for the Muse goes to the second-place finisher.
      • Because of the "jump," the muse for early July will be chosen by a special guest.
    • There's been some confusion regarding voting for multiple entries by the same participant: yes, you can vote for more than one piece by a single participant.
    • Some participants have expressed a desire to encourage "constructive criticism" and a more open sharing of comments. We are considering a system in which a participant can annotate if they want more serious (and perhaps helpful) criticism on their entries. Please post any thoughts, ideas, and concerns about this in the comment section for this reminder.

    Reminder: "Reaching the Summit"

We're almost to the top! Get your entries up!

    • The schedule for winners of a Muse choosing the next Muse is being extended. Many have complained and/or panicked (mostly panicked) at the thought of picking a Muse so quickly, so we're addressing that.
      • Beginning with the Muse for late June, winners will have until the Reminder post of the subsequent Muse to decide. Yes, this means that winners will no longer be picking the Muse that immediately follows the Muse they won, but will be picking the second Muse that follows their win.
    • We've received some questions pertaining to "place finishes" on specific Muses. We do, in fact, track everyone's finishes (including who did and didn't vote) and if anybody is curious as to how they fared in voting, send us an email and we'll gladly let you know (we will be opening a dedicated 10thDoM email address shortly... in the meantime, simply contact an admin).
    • Some participants have expressed a desire to encourage "constructive criticism" and a more open sharing of comments. While the admins will not enforce any kind of "forced commenting," we are considering a system in which a participant can annotate if they want more serious (and perhaps helpful) criticism on their entries. Please post any thoughts, ideas, and concerns about this in the comment section for this reminder.

Voting: "Live Like There's No Tomorrow"

Now there really is no tomorrow... for this topic!

    VOTE FOR YOUR TOP 4!  (TOP.  . .4 . . .4 . . .4!)

We have a new record for most entries, 21, which supplants (and destroys) the previous record of 13 set way back in early November of 2009 during the "Moon" Muse (that Muse is still tied for the record for most participants). What's this mean? Well, we're kinda growing... slowly, but surely.

Vote for your top four entries in the comments. Remember to vote for the entry, not the writer, and include the numeric designator (if applicable) since we have a few among us that give a extra reading assignments.

Also, multiple-part entries (i.e., She Writes #2) are considered one entry, regardless of how many parts. In other words: do not vote for each individual part, if that's your inclination.

Important Update (10:15 PM, Pacific Time, May 26, 2010): As one of our participants erred in both designating and linking subsequent entries, everyone needs to verify their votes are actually the entry they intended to vote for. Sorry for calling you out, She Writes, but we sort of have to...

She Writes #1 is "Rockin' It"
She Writes #3 is "Marred" (and was previously listed as "She Writes #1")

If you posted the title in your vote, then don't worry about it. However, if you only listed "She Writes #1," please clarify which piece you intended to vote for.

This is a ONE-TIME courtesy notification... mistakes on future Muses will be deleted and ignored (which is and always has been our usual policy, so no "crying foul").

Don't wait for tomorrow to not come! Vote today!

Reminder: "A Shot in the Dark"

Have you taken your shot yet? If not, open your eyes and pull the trigger, because you've only got 3 days left!

You may have noticed that comment moderation was turned on for the previous Muse, then summarily turned off. You also probably don't care, but just in case you might, the reasoning is as follows: there have been accusations and concerns about "strategic voting" (basically, people vote for "worse entries" in the hopes that their entries will win), so moderation was turned on in order to prevent that. However, admin/moderator comments (and, hence, their votes) are not subject to moderation, so that seemed a bit unfair. We are working on a new system, but until then, we'll just go with how we've been doing things.

    Winner: RoM01

It's official: the first-ever River of Mnemosyne Challenge is complete. There are a lot of "firsts" involved in the challenge, including:
    • First-time entrants Tom, She Writes, Nessa, sarahjayne smythe, and Mumsy (brave souls, all).
    • Our first-ever 1st Place tie, which led to our first-ever use of our tie-breaking procedures (most 1st Place votes).
    • A new admin's failure to post even the First Muse.
Anyway, enough about us, here's the winner:

    JeffScape!

    Congratulations!

We have to apologize, however, in that the trophy banner is not quite ready (due to our graphic designer spending a week beating up cops... seriously... he was teaching police officers Aikido defense techniques). Rest assured, we will get the trophy out as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can read the winning entry at the following links:
Also, we've decided that the River of Mnemosyne Challenge was a success (relatively speaking, of course) and it will absolutely make a return in 2011.

In the meantime, get ready for our return to our regular schedule... check back March 1st for the next Muse!

Thanks to everyone who swam in the River of Mnemosyne!
